Literature gone wrong

I been reading the most recent novel by Ian McEwan, Solar - and have spent all most the entire time I have been reading the book wondering why on earth I'm reading it. I wonder, is this post modernity, a species of irony, or nihilism? Pointlessness reified. I've hated every moment, and yet I find I have read it to it's coy/ daft/ bitter end.

Comments:
His writing has certainly changed...I remember his past books being so imminently great, now he is doing another thing with his writing that he must consider important and vital to answer the world's questions. I just want the story! The great story.
Have you read The Cement Garden? Or is it Concrete? and The Child in Time? Hm, I used to love him so much, but now it is mere respect. What would have Raymond Carver gone on to write, I wonder, had he lived. And I am so glad Doris Lessing has lived a long life. My favourite author right now is Paul Auster.
